For people in recovery, it usually refers to sober living homes that provide varying degrees of support and supervision. Services provided vary by location, but the primary goal of all halfway houses is to help residents adjust to a sober life and reintegrate into society. They accomplish this by connecting residents to local resources, such as clinics and peer-support programs, like 12-Step meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Attendance in continuing drug/alcohol therapy programs and the securing of a sponsor is often enforced as part of the halfway house rules to help maintain recovery. The structured environment of halfway houses usually includes support staff like a house manager and medical and mental health professionals. The presence of supportive staff, coupled with residents who are also in a similar stage of their recovery, helps a person develop life and social skills to better cope with the reintegration into society.
Other Treatment Options for Addiction
Prices can range from a few hundred to even a few thousand dollars, depending on the facility. Whether or not someone can bring their own medications into a sober living home depends on the facility’s policy. Some facilities permit residents to bring outside medications but have restrictions on the amount and type of medication. Other facilities have restrictions in place that require medications administered by staff members. Residents of a halfway house may be encouraged or required to work or attend school as part of their transition back into society. This may include job training or assistance with finding employment, as well as support for educational pursuits such as GED preparation or college courses.
Although in inpatient care, recovering addicts may not have their personal phones, halfway houses are generally more lenient. At some houses, the residents are allowed to have their phones during the day, but they must give them in at night. The reason for this is because phones can serve as a big trigger for people who are trying to focus on growth and sobriety, so it’s often more beneficial to be without them while recovering from addiction. Halfway houses for people without homes are designed for the general population, but the programs may be capable of helping people in recovery from substance abuse issues. They provide the support systems necessary for individuals to reconnect with their community and locate resources that help them find purpose. Residents of halfway houses will likely be required to attend therapy or 12-step program meetings as part of the house requirements, but halfway houses themselves do not provide addiction treatment.
A halfway house serves as an environment to bridge a completed rehab or substance use treatment program to regular life, allowing a person to reintegrate into society functionally. They offer a safe space and time away from typical triggers of addiction while providing connections to additional resources and services to promote long-term recovery. Unlike halfway houses or sober living homes, drug rehab provides active, on-site treatment for substance use disorders from the earliest stages of addiction treatment.

Those escaping difficult circumstances highly depend on halfway houses during rehabilitation. These developments might have been expected to be the death knell for the halfway house movement.

I have included a close up of the different houses details for inspiration. To achieve this festive transformation, I stuck to the winning combination of spray paint and non-smudge paint pens that worked wonders on my galvanized lanterns and houses. However, this time around, I wanted to add a 3-dimensional element to bring the gingerbread magic to life.
